Dengue claims 7 more lives raising unofficial death tally to 67

At least seven more people died of dengue fever in Dhaka, Dinajpur and Rangpur districts on Tuesday, pushing the total unofficial death tally to the date so far as 65.

In capital city Dhaka, three people died of dengue at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) today.

The deceased have been identified as Monwara Begum, 75, Amzad Mandal, 52, and Habibur Rahman, 21, according hospital source said.

With the three, a total of 17 people died of dengue fever at the DMCH since January 1.

Monwara was admitted to the hospital on August 3 with symptoms of dengue fever, the doctor said. Hailing from Chandpur district, she had been residing in Mirpur area of Dhaka, hospital sources said.

Hailing from Manikganj, Amzad Mandal was admitted to the hospital around 3:00am last night and breathed her last around 6:00am, the source said.

The victim’s younger brother Rashed Mandal told The Daily Star that his brother was infected with dengue on Friday and they took him to Manikganj Sadar Hospital on the day.

Later, Amzad Mandal was shifted to the DMCH as his condition deteriorated, he said.

After being infected with dengue, Habibur, a resident of Tejgaon area of Dhaka, admitted to the DMCH on July 31 and died at the ICU of the hospital around 2:20pm today, Anwar Hossain, a nephew of the victim, said.

In Dinajpur, Rabiul Islam, 17 died at M Abdur Rahim Medical College and Hospital around 5:00am.

Hailing from Thakurgaon's Ranisankail upazila, Rabiul was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of dengue fever.

In Rangpur, a three-year-old girl died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Rianna, 3, contracted dengue fever in Dhaka and was being treated at a clinic in Dhaka but was admitted to the hospital on August 3, our Dinajpur correspondent reports quoting Dr Abm Shahiduzzaman, a doctor of the hospital’s Medicine department.

UNB adds: In Manikganj, Raju Khan, 40, of Chala village of Harirampur upazila died while undergoing treatment at Munnu Medical College Hospital on Monday morning.

Hospital director Dr Mahbubul Hasan said Raju was admitted on August 3.

As many as 111 patients are currently being treated at various hospitals in the district.

In Chandpur, Madina Akter, 7, a kindergarten student, and daughter of Mizanur Rahman Dhali of Matlab
North upazila, died of dengue at Dhanmondi General and Kidney Hospital Ltd in the capital around on Monday midnight.

She was diagnosed with dengue and admitted to the hospital on August 3. She was later shifted to ICU.
According to a DGHS report, 29,912 people have been infected with the mosquito-borne disease until Tuesday, the highest ever in the country.

Last year the total number of dengue infected people was 10,148 that was the highest till then.
