Elections at Dhaka's both city corporations on Jan 30

The polls of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will be held on January 30, 2020, state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha news agency report said.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda announced the election schedule at a press conference held at the Agargaon Election Commission (EC) office following the commission's 57th meeting.

As per the schedule, the last date for nomination paper submission is December 31, nomination paper scrutiny will be held on January 2 and the deadline for candidature withdrawal is January 9.

Voting in all centres of the two city corporations will be held with electronic voting machines (EVMs).

The election will be held with the existing voter list while voting in the recently inducted 36 wards of the two city corporations will also be held on that day.

After the split of the Dhaka City Corporation, the elections of the two city corporations were held in April, 2015.

After the election, the first meeting of the DNCC was held on May 14 and DSCC on May 17.

So, the tenure of DNCC will end on May 13 in 2020 and DSCC on May 16 in the same year.

In accordance with the City Corporation Act 2009, there is obligation to hold election 180 days prior to the end of tenure.

A total of 30,35,621 voters are in DNCC. It has 54 general wards and 18 reserved wards and it will have around 1349 polling centres.

There are 23,67, 488 voters in DSCC. It has 75 general wards and 25 reserved wards.

There will be around 1124 polling centres in the DSCC polls.
