1 killed, dozens injured in Baitul Mukarram pandal collapse during storm

At least one person was killed and dozens were injured after a pandal collapsed on people at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque during storm this evening.

The deceased was identified as Shafiqul Islam, 35.

Witnesses said the incident took place shortly after Iftar, the breaking of fast by Muslims in the month of Ramadan.

Fire service’s Deputy Assistant Director Jalil said that between 150 and 200 people were trapped when the pandal, measuring about 300X100 feet, collapsed.

Contacted, Paltan police’s in-charge Mahmudul Haq confirmed one dead but could not give details.

Locals and pedestrians rushed to rescue the victims after the accident. Fire service personnel reached their within a very short time and rescued trapped people.

The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
